Europe Square transforms to "Berlin Square"

Berlin is about to carry its creativity out into the world: In Shanghai, which only recently joined the circle of Unesco acclaimed "Cities of Design," Berlin will be the third German federal state to present itself as part of the German Pavilion "balancity" at the Expo 2010. The focus of this presentation will be on the city's famous creative thinking throughout all disciplines – one of the main attributes that has led to Berlin's worldwide popularity. Be it music, film, fashion, product design or art – at the "Berlin Square" a representative cross-section of Berlin's bustling creative scene will be presented.

On a stage of about 200 m² and a visitor's area of about 400 m² within the 6,000 m² “Europe Square,” visitors of the Expo 2010 Shanghai will have the opportunity to experience Berlin's creativity to its full extent. All disciplines will be present. In addition to live gigs by Berlin music bands and DJs, a permanent and interactive installation will be at the core of the five days of presentation. A performance team will continuously set 25 cubes in motion, providing ever-changing relationships between the cubes – an installation as fluid as the character of Berlin itself. All team members of the Berlin Square will be dressed in paper suits that have been tailored individually by students of the ESMOD Berlin fashion school. Furthermore, Pictoplasma Characters will accompany the events on Berlin Square.

Live gigs by famous Berlin bands and DJs, such as Jeans Team, Jahcoozi, Kissogram and Ipek, will constitute the music program. In collaboration with "Hip Hop Headquarter Berlin," a live action painting performance from numerous Graffiti artists will be held. Meanwhile screenings of the film project "Coolness Codes" and the exhibition "Close your eyes and see" can be visited at the German Pavilion, and students from the Berlin School for Acrobatic Arts will lighten the waiting time of visitors.

The “Berlin Square” key visual and logo was designed by flora&faunavisions, Berlin. Create Berlin is entrusted with the conceptual design and realization of the Berlin events at Europe Square during Expo 2010. Responsible coordinator at the Berlin Senate for the Berlin Days of the German Pavilion is Mrs. Gabriele Schütze.
